allow permissions to be set for profile fields

I would love it ( in fact I really need this) if we can give permissions on profile fields.  For example in my case I have two distinct member types...   business and non-business. The former will need a website URL but the latter ( non-business) should not be able to add a URL in their profile.

I would not (personally) need it myself however I can see the value in having a few options here so that said fields could be based on permissions to some degree rather than having them just private or not.

do you think they will do this or is it best to pay for a plugin maybe?

I don't know. :)

As I say I can see the value in expanding its scope of usefulness more.

It could be done with a third party addon I guess looping though each via permission checks (not sure how resource hungry that would be though unless it was done carefully)

Rules already does this with custom data fields. Just add a field to members and set the permissions on the field how you like!

can you explain that a bit more to me please @Kevin Carwile

back to square one for me sorry @Kevin Carwile   I am a non techy so I cant make sense of it all...  I think an easier option for me would be a simple plugin else Im going to get in out of my depth Im afraid

No. The concept would be to add a string field attached to members and set it to public access. Then for the input type choose url.

Then simply set the permission on the field to allow only certain member groups to edit it.

Done.
