stepy Posted July 6, 2014 Posted July 6, 2014 Sorry for opening an old post. This is still a big problem, e.g. as far as sharing a link on Facebook, special characters URLs coming form my IPB community are not being shared correctly. I am really worried about this  I would like URLs to be clean, not special characters or special signs, neither capital letter on Tags (please, have also a look at this latest issue). Towards IP4, are you going to consider this serious issue for no-English communities ? Thanks

stepy Posted July 7, 2014 Posted July 7, 2014 So you did not follow Sonya's fix????? Of course ! By the way, a big thanks to Sonya: great work, Sonya, much appreciated ! I have been talking about this issue here '?do=embed' frameborder='0' data-embedContent>> I have been hoping internet to go forward and to be able to accept special characters without any issue. In 2014 we are still here to discuss this issue, we still have problems because of special characters in URLs. I would really appreciate IPS to make an effort to fix this issue. I am deeply concerned because we, not English communties, cannot share properly links form our communities in social networks. Once shared, URLs including special charcacters form IPB looks spammy. That is because people copy and paste form address bar. Should we ask social users to change manually their link in order URL to look correctly as shared in social networks ? Towards IP4 we wish a default IPB fix for special characters in URL. I kindly require you, IPB Staff, to have a closer look at this issue. Thank you
Aiwa Posted July 7, 2014 Posted July 7, 2014 The URLs are encoded when shared to ensure compatibility. I fail to see how this is IP.Boards fault because the sharing engine is unable to decode the URL and replace with the proper chatachters. I would venture a guess you would prefer links that look ugly but work as opposed to links that look pretty but don't work because the site you're sharing it on doesn't recognize a character.

As said in my last post, current "World Wide Web" is not ready. Nobody is guilty here, just responsible: We all bear the responsability here of a pleasant user experience related with our communities. I respect user form my communities, they make a great effort to keep on. I do not want URLs from their posts to be considered spam, once shared on social networks, just because they look ugly. How could we neglect this issue, considering e.g. a great post there talking about how "friendly URLs" should be '?do=embed' frameborder='0' data-embedContent>> ? I am from Spain, Spanish language is the 2th most spoken in the world, not considering Hindu and Mandarin. Any big Spanish community is strictly avoiding special characters in URLs. That is a fact. Do we really believe IPS could not take into account those facts ? As already pointed out here, let me also add any of following issues probably related with special characters in URLs: Yes. However, it does not deal with my the specific community but with browsers. If you use non-English OS and copy-paste the url from the address bar, you'll see that your clipboard has the copied URL procent escaped. This is nothing that you can change in IPS. It is just current standard, RFC 3986: And there are not only browsers that percent-encode UTF-8 URLs. When I would use special characters in URLs, my server logs would look like this. GET /dir1/%D0%A6%D1%8E%D1%80%D0%B8%D1%85%D1%81%D0%BA%D0%B8%D0%B9_%D1%83%D0%BD%D0%B8%D0%B2%D0%B5%D1%80%D1%81%D0%B8%D1%82%D0%B5%D1%82.html HTTP/1.1 User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.5a) Gecko/20030728 Mozilla Firebird/0.6.1 … Just impossible for visual analysis without any additional tool. When I would like to block specific URLs in robots.txt or add a new rule to mod_rewrite, then I have to use the same long string. Means that they are just not readable by human. Another problem is netiquette. Do you have special characters like ü, ö, ä, ß on your keyboard? Do you have cyrillic letters on your keyboard? Chinese, Arabic? Can you type (not copy paste, but type!) the ulrs below if I would tell the address to you by phone? http://www.mysite.com/grüße http://www.mysite.com/привет You cannot type them yourself. You can only copy and paste those URLs. Another thing that can cause it that Google requires sitemap to be encoded http://support.googl...en&answer=35653 I am not sure how IPS default sitemap looks like when special characters are used in URL.
