Invision Community 4: SEO, prepare for v5 and dormant account notifications By Matt November 11, 2024
Clancy Posted March 4, 2010 Posted March 4, 2010 This is related to this bug http://community.invisionpower.com/index.php?app=tracker&showissue=21079 that has now been addressed. This I was told should be put in as a suggestion although I think it relates to the other which was submitted as a bug. When you logout from an IP.Content page, you get redirected back to the forum home. If you are using IP.Content in your root directory and as your index home page, then surely it makes sense that the logout redirect should be your home index page rather than the forum index. I would prefer it logged out and redirected back to the page the user logged out from... but back to the index page would be much preferable to the forum home page. That's just confusing for the user I think. Clancy
bfarber Posted March 4, 2010 Posted March 4, 2010 There's nothing I can do in IP.Content about that. Will move this to IPB.
DReffects2 Posted March 4, 2010 Posted March 4, 2010 EXCELLENT Suggestion. Of course the user should be redirected to the page he came from
Clancy Posted March 4, 2010 Author Posted March 4, 2010 There's nothing I can do in IP.Content about that. Will move this to IPB. Just curious Brandon, does this not relate to IP.Content more than IPB? Clancy
Wolfie Posted March 4, 2010 Posted March 4, 2010 Just curious Brandon, does this not relate to IP.Content more than IPB? Clancy It may relate to IP.Content, but it would have to be designed within IPB, I think. Then IPC could be set to make use of it.
Michael Posted March 5, 2010 Posted March 5, 2010 You're logging out of IP.Board, not IP.Content, it's IP.Board that controls where you go when you log out.
bfarber Posted March 5, 2010 Posted March 5, 2010 Exactly - IP.Content is a module that works within IP.Board, and has to "follow" IP.Board's rules. IP.Board handles the logout, so any code changes would be in IP.Board.
Clancy Posted March 6, 2010 Author Posted March 6, 2010 Ah ok. Thanks for clearing that up. Also just curious about what is considered a suggestion rather than a bug... I put this in as a suggestion, but the other "login issue" that I linked to above was considered a bug. Just wondering why the login redirecting to the forum home was considered a bug but the logout redirecting to the forum home was seen as something that should be put in as a suggestion. Clancy
Wolfie Posted March 6, 2010 Posted March 6, 2010 Suggestion is to change the way something is done (done on purpose) while a bug is something that is happening that isn't working as it's supposed to. Let's take how the board handles a banned member...Intended design If someone is banned and they log into the board, then they cannot log out. Even if they click on the option to clear all the cookies from their computer, it will leave the one that says they are banned. That's on purpose.Examples of a bug - They are able to log out and/or clear all the cookies so that they are logged out and able to log back in using different credentials. - If someone else tries to log out or clear all the cookies and it doesn't work.Example of a suggestion Make it so that if someone clicks to log out or clear all the cookies, the board will report an error, giving the impression that there is a bug in the board that needs to be fixed, so the person won't realize that it's purposely keeping them signed in.
Clancy Posted March 8, 2010 Author Posted March 8, 2010 Thanks for clearing that up Wolfie. Cheers Clancy
bfarber Posted March 8, 2010 Posted March 8, 2010 Our login functionality has code to try to send you back to the correct location. It wasn't working 100% correctly, so we consider that a bug. Our logout process has no code to try to send you back somewhere specific, so there can be no "bug" in this case. We would first need to add such code, which is a suggestion.
