~Dopey~ Posted June 15, 2007 Posted June 15, 2007 It would seem the simplest solution is to make entering the year optional when entering a birthday. That way those who want to show their age can, but those who do not can still get birthday greetings one per year. What's the big deal?... make the year optional and everyone is happy. It's almost important that an administrator knows the age of his/hers users because of the COPPA legislation thus if the D.O.B option were removed it'd be difficult to discover the age(s) of their user(s)
Oasismad Posted June 15, 2007 Posted June 15, 2007 I really cannot understand why someone would wish to hide their D.O.B or parts of it. It's just your D.O.B/age -- what the hell does it matter? It really really does baffle me!So you wouldnt mind your 12 year old relation getting groomed by older users?

Digi Posted June 15, 2007 Posted June 15, 2007 Someone speaking sense and you only live 15 miles from me :lol:I find it ironic that you "glazed by" something someone posted, yet earlier were bashing them for the same sort of thing. Perhaps you should read your own topic instead of continuing to go on your evangelistic tirade about this? Before you hit the reply button...make sure to read the conversation below! And they can remove the birthdate at a later date if they want to, all they have to do is edit their profile information and choose the ----- options for each of the birthdate fields.Try it, it says you have entered an invalid date, shes already tried thisThat was a bug in 2.2.2 specifically - you can remove your birthdate in 2.3 (and other versions earlier than 2.2.2)@ DopeyIt's almost important that an administrator knows the age of his/hers users because of the COPPA legislation thus if the D.O.B option were removed it'd be difficult to discover the age(s) of their user(s)COPPA doesn't require that you keep on file the birth date of the individual, just that you be sure to ask. In either case (coppa settings in ACP on or off), the user can lie, so it doesn't matter. :)

There is a different function for COPPA compliance during registration. So, since the birthday is entirely optional, when entering a birth date, why not allow users to enter or to not enter their birth year optionally and at their own discretion? Seems there would be no downfall to this, as far as I can see.
Oasismad Posted June 15, 2007 Posted June 15, 2007 Tell you what ignore its there when someone gets attacked by some paedo from an Invision board - then dont try and condemn when you have accepted its ok now, at least vbulletin got something right
~Dopey~ Posted June 15, 2007 Posted June 15, 2007 Yes but still, if you're a popular site then asking each individual is daft. What it all boils down to: who is pathetic/daft enough to want to lie about their age?Tell you what ignore its there when someone gets attacked by some paedo from an Invision board - then dont try and condemn when you have accepted its ok now, at least vbulletin got something right:lol: That's just laughable. It's just a forum, a form of communication.
Oasismad Posted June 15, 2007 Posted June 15, 2007 All im asking is to hide your age if you want to. are you some kind of sex offender?
Digi Posted June 15, 2007 Posted June 15, 2007 Tell you what ignore its there when some gets attached by some paedo from an Invision board - then dont try and condemn when you have accepted its ok now, at least vbulletin got something rightWow.... let me make it clear.Though there is no option to hide your birthday on IPB forumsYOU CAN REMOVE IT FROM YOUR PROFILEWhat is the difference between removed and hidden? In either case the information is only useful to you since no one else can access it.
~Dopey~ Posted June 15, 2007 Posted June 15, 2007 All im asking is to hide your age if you want to. are you some kind of sex offender? That's not even a logical argument.
Oasismad Posted June 15, 2007 Posted June 15, 2007 no you cant it says your entering an invalid date if you try to remove it how stupid are you - cant you read?
Digi Posted June 15, 2007 Posted June 15, 2007 Yes but still, if you're a popular site then asking each individual is daft. What it all boils down to: who is pathetic/daft enough to want to lie about their age? That's just laughable. It's just a forum, a form of communication. You didn't get what I meant, sorry. IPB has a setting to enable COPPA checking. It asks, during registration, if the user was born before or after "yesterday's" date. Then choose one. If they choose the one that makes them under 13, they are given a form that their parents are required to fill out. You don't need to know their age, and they can lie with this system. COPPA makes no requirements except that you, for lack of better words, "try to go out of your way to protect the privacy of children under the age of 13". :)
Digi Posted June 15, 2007 Posted June 15, 2007 no you cant it says your entering an invalid date if you try to remove it how stupid are you - cant you read?Obviously you can't ;)

elj Posted June 15, 2007 Posted June 15, 2007 All im asking is to hide your age if you want to. are you some kind of sex offender?I'll reply before this gets locked. The reason your member is unable to reset her birthdate is due to the fact that you are on 2.2.2. If you upgrade, this is fixed. (See Matt's post). At the current time it is not possible to only show the date of birth without the year, but as a temporary solution you can remove the date of birth entirely. To stop this situation happening in the future, you can tell members not to show their date of birth. That's the best response you'll get out of anyone at this time. :)
Brandon C Posted June 15, 2007 Posted June 15, 2007 YOU CAN REMOVE IT FROM YOUR PROFILEWas that really necessary?
Digi Posted June 15, 2007 Posted June 15, 2007 Was that really necessary? :rolleyes:Obviously it was... How many times must I repeat myself, or everyone else for that matter, before the text is actually read. I figured I'd make it bright bold letters so it wasn't missed ;) I guess of course we could have left him continuing calling IPS pedo lovers. :P But I'm the idiot that needs a grip
Oasismad Posted June 15, 2007 Posted June 15, 2007 Obviously you can't ;)No obviously i cant read you cant remove the date in 2.2.0 my bad, get a grip idiot

Digi Posted June 15, 2007 Posted June 15, 2007 It's no wonder people complain about the attitude of members on this forum sometimes, with mature responses like yours.I'll remember to post this the next time you make your common snide comments to others that don't agree with you in debates (or otherwise) ;)
Brandon C Posted June 15, 2007 Posted June 15, 2007 It's no wonder people complain about the attitude of members on this forum sometimes, with mature responses like yours.I was thinking the same thing, James. And epscially with Digi being a moderator over at IPS Beyond, you would think he would have a better sense of professionalism when replying, instead of having a condescending attitude.
Oasismad Posted June 15, 2007 Posted June 15, 2007 The fact you pay for this software and you get responses like this, i was part of the SMF forum and they treated their members with respect regardless of the fact that it was open source software thanks LilJames for your support at least
Alex Duggan Posted June 15, 2007 Posted June 15, 2007 OK, think it's best we bring this topic to an end now. Oasismad, thank you for your suggestion - I believe that this is being considered for a future version as it has been suggested a few times before - it's just a shame some of our established members couldn't have been a bit more welcoming to your suggestion.
