Why not just have it as a normal clickable link so you can just right-click it and select "Copy Link Location" ?

whats the difference? You can just click the link and select copy it.

It just seems a bit out of place having a popup for this. I also normally check the link by loading it, and having it as a normal link has the added benefit that you can just click it to check.

I imagine it uses a bit more code under the hood to show a popup.

It does, and just as importantly, Internet Explorer 7 and above prompt you with the rather ominous "Information Bar" before they even CONSIDER showing the popup box.
