This new Text Editor

Very nice with the Next/Previous for the smiles now.
Seems to be some bug in there though when jumping back and forth, but I'm sure that will soon be fixed.

I really like the feel of the new editor now! :)

I'm happy you removed those overlay lines on the smilies, a left and right arrow would be better than previous and next imo. Text editor is almost perfect now :thumbsup: Also, would be nice if we could sort the smilies in a different order :D

What I may have to say here may be what others have said already. I went through the text editor and here is what I have to say about it.

I actually do like the text editor except for the color option. In version 2.1, we had had more options that you currently now have. Now I would have to go look for the color code that I may want. Granted it may be more than what we had when version 1.3, but it seems you are going a bit backwards in the colors here slightly. That's my opinion on that anyway.

I do like the drop down boxes. Now in the pm system where the text editor is, there actually is an area to upload files. I like that as we didn't have that option before.

These options are still here. They have just been moved to the upper right corner.

Also, how often do you post messages with every color of the rainbow? There may be less colors, but it's not like people used all the colors anyway.

As for the colors, I may not use every color of the spectrum, but I like the choices we had on 2.1. Now I'd have to look up the color code that I may need.

I run a rpg on my board and we use the colors quite often especially red. I like the lighter version of red rather than what we currently have there right now in this version. Everything else, I like.

I agree with you, especially since IPB's now works flawlessly with Opera 9, whereas the RTE used in vBulletin, Burning Board, etc. don't. The majority may not use Opera, but it's a huge advantage to have as much cross-browser compatibility as possible. (w00t)

Actually your right about the upload part of the pm system. I don't normally use it but needed to use it recently, but apparently one of the boards that I am a member at had disabled that option.

I'd still love to see the plus and minus sign on the bottom rather than scrolling up for it.

I don't know if it has been suggested before, but I'll say it anyways.

I think the popups (for example, Insert Image) should have a lot more width and less height. After the Ok and Cancel buttons, it's just a bunch of black space. The input for the URL is way too tiny, it should be much longer so the URL doesn't bump down to the next line. Why is it using a textarea anyways?

Oh yea, one more thing. When clicking the Undo or Redo buttons, the whole editor pushes down a tiny bit because when you click the button, it adds that black border.

I'm not exactly sure what was wrong with the RTE in v2.1 (other than a few bugs), and I'm wondering whether the new version is change for the sake of change. It certainly needs a lot more thought put into it, IMHO.

I do like the concept of grouping various formatting options together to achieve less clutter, but I don't like its implementation. To me, it lacks "consistency". If you're gonna have headings for some of the drop-downs ("Fonts", for example), then you need to have them for all drop-downs. I mean, what does "2" mean? Nothing at all. That drop-down should have a heading called "Sizes". Also, "Insert Special Item" should be re-labelled as "Special Items". Why? Because "Insert Special Item" is a phrase and an instruction to do something, rather than a simple list heading. (The "Fonts" drop-down doesn't say "Choose From These Fonts", does it?) Besides, "Insert Special Item" sounds like an instruction on the back of a sex toy package!

I can't understand the reasoning for removing the "+/-" options from the bottom of the text editor. Okay, I can understand the desire to replace them with graphical up and down arrows... but I can't understand the logic in placing them on the top toolbar. If you run out of typing space, whereabouts in the text editor are you gonna be? - At the bottom. Therefore, you'd need to scroll back up and click on a down arrow, and then scroll back down again to continue writing your post. This defies all logic. If you need to expand the size of the editor window, the buttons for being able to do so should be right where you need them to be.

A lot of people have said that they think the text editor is now too wide (I totally agree). So the solution was to suddenly add in a new side-panel, which displays a selection of emoticons and... (wait for it...) a list of "Quick Access" items [see, now I'm confused - are we not going to "Insert Special Item" anymore?]. Okay, do we want these things on the top toolbar, or do we want them on a sidebar? We surely don't want them in two different places? (I thought we were trying to get rid of clutter?!) I love the idea of the toggled sidebar, but if that's where those options are going to be placed, let's completely get rid of them off the top toolbar.

As for the list of Quick Access/Special Items... why is "Unlink" in red/bold text? It sticks out like a sore thumb and looks like a formatting error. Likewise, why is "Link", "Image...", "Email...", "Code", and "Quote" in bold text, whereas "Text" is not? This is all very inconsistent.

At this stage, I feel that the layout/design of the new RTE is a backwards step from what we've currently got in v2.1. It's certainly got potential to be much better, but it seems to be one step forward and two steps back.

Edit: Well, I've just used the Quick Edit feature and I see that the "+/-" buttons are still there. Okay, great - but where's the consistency there??

It's hideous. There are too many drop down menus and the editor is WAY too wide. I prefer the smilies on the left side still.

Please tell me it will be easy to reskin the RTE into the old style. >_<

I don't like the new editor at all. It looks worst then before. Why are the similes in a drop down window? Why has eveything been put into drop down menus? not everything works in drop down menus. Some of the features look good but some of them feel like they should have been in 2.1 so I'm thinking of not swtching to 2.2. I hope I will be able to use the old options for the text edtor like there will be for the profile view. Which by they way looks bad. I mean very bad looking and lot of it is too myspace... IP.Board is a message board system, not myspace.

Why have a drop down when adding an attachment? That is just one more step to make to get the attachment(s) into the message box. I think more time should have been spent on being able to upload "multiple" attachments?

Well, assuming the new text editor is just a bunch of JavaScript files, can't it be edited fairly easily to act more like the text editor of the 2.1.

Oops...The new RTE looks good but it need several tweaks. But I am asking to myself... Why can't IPB use a third party solid and stable RTE editor like FCKEditor for WordPress? It works really fine with any browser, even when posting from my cell phone.

Also, I don't like the attachment management system.

It would better with a button in the toolbar. The toolbar could be richer, too: add link, add image, add e-mail link, and so on. Too much dropdown lists.

Same here: link, image, quote + smilies are the most used functions on my boards. I'd like to have those as buttons above the text box and not the rarely used font formatting stuff.

It would be nice if it would be configurable what buttons we can use on top of the text box.

It would be also helpful if it would be possible to access those functions (link, image, quote) with keyboard shotcuts, like it used to be in one of the previous versions of IPB. Like Alt+Q for quote etc.

We use custom smilies so smilies drop-down box will be totally useless. It will be the first thing to remove it.

Smilies box on the left, especially Previous and Next act irregularly. Its not clear yet how the smilies in the box are controlled, I'd like it to be very much like in the current version - selected smilies are marked as clickable and appear in the smilies box left to the post and rest of the smilies are visible in the pop-up window after "Show all" is clicked.

Currently on this board Next and Previous display different results every time I click them. Sometimes Next shows only couple of smilies, then pressing Previous shows not the first page of smilies but some selection of smilies, there is one more Previous...Looks like with Next I move to the next page and with Previous there appears to be multiple "previous" pages of smilies. Confusing.

I clicked on Insert Link in Quick access menu here and it took 50 seconds for the link "window" to actually appear. After waiting for 20 seconds I continued typing this post and when the link "window" finally appeared the "Link Text" box contained the text what I had typed.
I cannot clear the Link Text box, it is not active. "Cancel" works though.

NB! Tooltip on smilies drop-down box says "Background Color". Or is it just me?

I think the text box needs a lot more work.

^ You've got exactly the same issues I had with this design. :D Good, it's nice to hear I'm not alone. ;) It's just not functional. Neat, sure, but I'd rather have stuff I use on display.

I'm not sure if this has been suggested elesewhere, but I'll give it a go.

Seems like a lot of people don't really like the new dropdown menu, myself included. Those menu items are used frequently (well, at least the insert link and insert image). Maybe the icons for those could be restored (there seems to be plenty of room next to the emoticon dropdown) and put some of the not so frequently used commands in there, such as indent, outdent, numbering, insert list and text alignment.

Other than that darn dropdown menu, I like the new editor. Well, ok....I don't like how the emoticon box is set up either, but I'll save that for another post.

all in all I like the new RTE, I really love the fact that the 'Insert Special Item' can have custom things put in it. I don't like that the hyperlink and image buttons got removed and placed in the 'insert special item' dropdown. The addition of them to the side bar helps some but I'd rather still have the buttons for them.

why are the smilies appearing twice? it looks much better on the left panel without any ugly scroller bars.

GET RID of the smilies on the horizontal options. (under Fonts).

maybe the other options can be aligned to the left or center instead of far right. its not user friendly to have some options on far left and some on far right.
