Our take on managing successful online communities

4.3: Engagement Improvements

As we come close to wrapping up development of Invision Community 4.3, we wanted to let you know of a few smaller improvements we've made to increase engagement to your community.

Email
Despite fancy new things like social media and push notifications, trusty old email has been proven to be highly effective at getting repeat visitors to your website.

It's one of the reasons Invision Community has built in email support for notifications that can be sent instantly, or via daily or weekly digests.

Email should form a part of every community marketing strategy but curating content and building newsletters can often be a labor intensive task.

With Invision Community 4.3 we have added some additional automated email tools to help your users discover more of your carefully crafted content.

Highlight the best content from throughout your community
In 4.2 we introduced the concept of curated content with promotions and “Our Picks”. With 4.3 we’ve taken this a step further and these promoted items will now appear directly in your content related emails.

This allows for your audience to be enticed back to your community with items that they may not have read but holds interest.

Capture return visits with interesting content

Social media links in email footers
If you look closely in the image above you will also see that you can now optionally include links to all of your social media sites within the footer of all of your outgoing emails.

Both of these new features are enabled by default but can be disabled in the email settings section of your admin control panel.

Email may be as old as the web itself, but it is a very powerful medium to get your audience coming back for more.

Respond to Reviews
We added the ability to leave a review to Pages articles, download files, calendar events and in other areas early on in Invision Community 4. The concept was to allow your members to engage in new ways with your content. Reviews on Commerce store items and purchasable downloadable goods is a great way to inspire others to purchase.

New to Invision Community 4.3 is the ability for the content creator (be that a download file, store owner, etc) to respond to a review. This is a great way to address reviews that may be considered unfair or extreme.

One more thing...
Not content with resurrecting the Subscriptions manager from 2009, we've brought back a small detail from previous versions of Invision Community. The famous "this person is typing a reply" indicator in the online list.

We can't wait to release this latest update. With new ways to monetise your community, new ways to engage your audience and better promotion tools, we're excited to see how it's going to benefit your community.

Looks great! One feature I would love to see is the ability for images uploaded into posts to be automatically added to the gallery. Is this something that's in the pipeline?

Does the "Typing..." tooltip only appear when you mouse over the user name?

I would rather have it like facebook, somewhere above the editor.

Indeed, looks like it's just the same that was removed after 3.x

@Andy Millne: Forgive me if this has been mentioned or highlighted elsewhere, are there any plans to include browser notifications?

These are highly effective IMO.

Can you clarify what you're looking for? Invision Community has supported Browser Notifications since 4.1. - If you go to the notifications options page, it will tell you if you can use browser notifications, or if they're enabled - https://invisioncommunity.com/notifications/options/

For example,

If I publish a new article via IP.Pages, can a browser notification be sent to those who have approved the options? I'm not sure this is currently available.

Hello guys,

i would suggest adding an automatic newsletter (digest) sent to the latest X month active members,

we have a big community with 80.000 and we cant send emails to all of them,

the best is to send digest to active members in latest 30 days for example (last login, post, comment, ..).

It will reengage them again and again.

we are doing that with an external service (acy mailing for joomla) and work pretty great.

Invision always teasing us with interesting features but no release date so we refresh the blog on a daily (sometimes more) basis

Was there ever any date range such as "By end of Q1 2018" or anything like that? Haven't kept up too much so might have missed any initial timelines.

Yeah, they talked about a pre-release by the end of January.

Yes it will be good to know some basic info as at the end of January we didn't get anything .....

1)It will be a Pre release or a final version?

2)Any E.T.A ? - I know the answer will be when is ready but if it is not out on March then i think is getting to long and maybe it will be better to add one by one the updates and release them, than get them all at once on an update once per year....

But that's me :)

Other than that congrats to IPB for all that great new features !

i checked it but it seems that it dont send automatic mails to users being connected latest X days. no ?

Oh you should check Inactive Members by @Fosters.  You can send automated messages to users who haven't visited in X days, might be perfect for you.

A couple of things for future consideration:

1. Highlight content in email - I want to second the concerns voiced above.  Some communities don't use Our Picks or social promotion.  They need to be given fallback options such as Popular Content or Leaderboard content.

2. Review Response - something to consider for future enhancement is the ability for moderators or administrators to respond as well.  Usually the Mods and Admins are the most active users on the site and can interject sooner, can clarify site policies, or provide methods of recourse that regular users are not always aware.

3. Typing - I love the idea behind this feature.  It's real time, immediate, and gets users hooked onto the activity of the website.  But the online user list (and hovering over a member) is not a common or noticeable place to look.

Agree with Joel on those points there.

If the typing thing is hidden away as a tool tip, it seems a bit of a waste of the potential extra resource usage especially on a huge site. Hopefully it's a toggle option at least. I'm really not sure if that improvement is a hit or a miss.

The review option being on top of the comments option really bugs me as people use reviews to comment not actually review, plus comments were around a lot longer than reviews and sites often seem to have more of them than reviews, so it often looks like is no responses if there are no reviews on an item.

In the calendar reviews being on top of comments often makes no sense for the majority of events, who reviews Acension Day or Christmas Day? Fortunately you can switch them off in the Calendar settings.

I recall a mod for that but I've always figured it should be an admins preference setting. I usually end up disabling reviews except on Downloads files.

Some really good ideas here though, but feeling particularly selfish righ now, I'm desperate to see member engagement increase by being able to automatically import RSS/XML feeds as Pages Articles built in, as well as be able to import and layout third party content via XML and JSON into blocks and widgets.
