Product association?

In the Commerce app, what does "Purchases of this product must be associated with another purchase" mean? Does that mean the product cannot be purchased until the parent product has been purchased?

I want to make a free add-on that cannot be downloaded unless the user owns our main product.

It means it cannot be purchased unless they have also purchased an item that you have selected it has to be associated with, in the setup of that product
