Is it safe to use master skin as parent? Is there tutorial about sub themes? What parent actually means?

The children will follow the parent except for specific changes you make. You can see it on this site. They've created a custom theme (a parent) but it's also possible to choose which colours you want to show at the bottom of the page. Those colour differences are part of the child designs but they all feed off the parent. It means that if they want to do other customising to all themes, they only have to change the parent and not all the individual themes they offer.
