Help with test install

Ok, so I have been a CIC user for years, I have never done my own server work. I bought the script for forums and have managed to get the live site installed and working without issue. I want to get the test site installed but I am stuck. Can they both run off the same server or do I need another? And if they do run on the same server how do I set that up? As a subdomain? This is where I am confused. 

I am wanting to learn more and hopefully get to where I can be a better admin technically, but I think I may hit some road blocks

Basically, you can have a test intall in same server. This test install must be locked to public (no registration allowed) and hidden from public view.

On install, you must inform your serial number appended with -TESTINSTALL. So: XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-TESTINSTALL
