Invision Community 4: SEO, prepare for v5 and dormant account notifications Matt November 11, 2024Nov 11
October 22, 20168 yr Going to need more information than what you've given. What's the site that you're trying to optimise? What page did you run the YSlow test on? If you're doing performance testing in, say, forum threads, you may have a lot of external requests for members' signatures, posted images, etc. This is inevitable, and it's a fact of life when running a forum. However, even without that information there's still a lot of low-hanging fruit. If you're fully self-hosted, setting up your site behind a CDN can improve things quite a bit. Your CDN would be able to deliver content more efficiently, and they would also be able to add expires headers and gzip compression to content on your own site.
October 22, 20168 yr Author It was on the board index that I ran the test. Is there a proper guide to set up a CDN with my forum? I've looked into this for some time but lack of knowledge has put me off, as well as the supposed costs.
October 24, 20168 yr Author Cloudflare free CDN :-) A few months back it was suggested I use this in htacess Does using a CDN mean I wouldn't need to do that? I don't know completely how it works or how to set one up, or if they work as successful if I continue to host my files
October 24, 20168 yr That .htaccess sets cache headers for static content and uses gzip compression to reduce bandwidth needs. Cloudflare and other CDNs can do that with the click of a button, so you wouldn't need to modify your .htaccess file. I also use Cloudflare for my website. Cloudflare's free offerings alone are brilliant and can significantly improve performance, plus there's other performance-enhancing goodies such as HTTP/2.
October 24, 20168 yr Author I have installed Cloudfront CDN for the uploads directory, and made no other changes (apart from remove the stuff in htacess for cache headers). But look at the difference? Something isn't right surely. Pagespeed has gone from B to E and Yslow score E to F. Are there specific settings in cloudfront I need to change?
October 24, 20168 yr Author Took the CDN off and it goes back to B and E and does in general feel faster than it was with the CDN in place. It's the code I place in htacess that has the main effect, if I remove that without the cdn it goes right back down to E and F again. But with it in place it is always B and E.

You use too many external resources and this slow speed site, exmaple There are 21 static components without a far-future expiration date. https://www.googletagservices.com/tag/js/gpt.js October 24, 20168 yr Author It does redirect to /forums but that is two instead of one for some reason. I can't explain the skimlinks redirects, maybe it is normal for that to happen with skimlinks? I still expected the CDN to improve the speed but it didn't. It seems faster without.
October 24, 20168 yr In optimization speed site uses CDN or Cookies-free domain, but once you've decided other issues
October 24, 20168 yr We don't use a CDN (Tried cloudflare and had loads of hassle with very poor support) and have pretty good scores on a decent server setup. A lot of poor scores can generally be attributed to poor server setup.
October 28, 20168 yr We use maxcdn and a few basic nginx tweaks. It looks good, but please test here and show results.
October 28, 20168 yr Too bad indicators own site MaxCDN... https://developers.google.com/speed/pagespeed/insights/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.maxcdn.com%2F&tab=mobile https://developers.google.com/speed/pagespeed/insights/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.maxcdn.com%2F&tab=desktop https://gtmetrix.com/reports/www.maxcdn.com/7sXtTEPo

A lot of poor scores can generally be attributed to poor server setup. Have you all tried the .htaccess that I have here in the Marketplace?
October 28, 20168 yr Have you all tried the .htaccess that I have here in the Marketplace? I did add that some time ago, but doesn't made any much difference. Without cloudflare was like 89% or around about, with cloudflare it's https://gtmetrix.com/reports/www.baysidegamers.com/Z5FNFzwe
October 29, 20168 yr @EmpireKickass I wonder what the two reports look like for with/without. I mean, we can see the with Cloudflare which gives some insight to performance improvements. The custom theme also has a lot of customizations that take the score down. The load time being exactly at 2.0s is borderline for good/bad. Some retests are reporting over 2.0 which according to Google is when people lose interest and leave. I want to see if I can improve the .htaccess optimizations in the near future.
October 29, 20168 yr @Tarun how were you able to get ride of "Remove query strings from static resources"?
October 29, 20168 yr @nodle To be honest, I didn't change anything. I'm using the default IPS theme for my forum too.

Consider that it's an very heavy customizations theme with big images it has an very good score for that. The htaccess file that you have on the marketplace I already had that in my htaccess for some time now, I did edited it to day since there was an line missing for some odd reasons.
October 29, 20168 yr @nodle To be honest, I didn't change anything. I'm using the default IPS theme for my forum too. Strange I am pretty sure they use query strange for their .css. Even on the default here they use them. https://gtmetrix.com/reports/invisionpower.com/K97fpV30 Yours is the first IPB forum I've come across to not show them.
October 29, 20168 yr Yours is the first IPB forum I've come across to not show them. Not displayed query stringe in the site Tarun because under or equal 7 css Gtmetrix ignore them. In fact query string don't affect the speed site...
October 29, 20168 yr @Tarun Guess what I found, two weeks ago before cloudflare was added and now https://gtmetrix.com/reports/www.baysidegamers.com/J29gZm4T
October 29, 20168 yr @EmpireKickass Cloudflare don't solve the first byte and cache static content. Also other issues... https://www.webpagetest.org/result/161029_57_WA1/1/performance_optimization/
