is it possible to ad a sidebar on version 4? I can't find a setting.

You can do this from the front end.  Click the > arrow on the left and drag and drop the blocks you want into the sidebar.

Although part of the site refers to a 'suite sidebar on pages' - not yet discovered what the 'suite sidebar' is

 

 

The "Suite Sidebar" is just a sort of nesting box where you may then place custom blocks or other widgets while using the previously mentioned Front End layout editor. (arrow on the left side of your community)
