Configuring site access for support

I always seem to have issues with support not being able to overwrite files file ftp and not sure what I’ve done wrong. I have a user for them, lets called it ipssupport. I have a install of the forum and owner/group is apache:apache (I am on CentOS). I have added ipssupport to the apache group.

And as I type this post I think I know the problem. My file permissions are set to 644 which would be read only for groups. So, should I make all files 664 or is there a better way to setup a support account for IPS?
