Migraiting users, downloads, and forums only from 3.x to 4.x

Why would you want to do this?

I think the short answer would be this is not advisable as the best way to "migrate" users and content is to use the upgrader.

I could think of one, for example, on our site we are working on things behind the scenes, all pages are being re-written (mostly due to the fact blocks and such do not transfer over), as well as we are working on other custom things.  Since our site is already established we have cannot simply upgrade and work on it, so, we are working on our IP4 site and once we get to a certain milestone in the development we will be shutting down our live 3.4.7 site, upgrading it to 4.0, and then pulling the member database and forum posts over to populate our IP4 site which would then be made live.

I think everyone is in a similar situation where they have items from 3.4 that won't work in 4.0.

The advisable route would be to upgrade a test instance, do the work you need and export the work. Then turn offline your live instance, run the upgrade to get new items, import your work and then publish live. Granted there is a lot of work in between and better routes but there is not currently a full proof way to migrate 3.4 members, forums, etc.. into an already created 4.0 instance (that I'm aware of, IPS could have one but I doubt it :) )

Ok, so let's see if I have this correct.

1) Setup a test site with a fresh install of 4.x

2) Configure 4.x, and setup all my custom modules as needed

When I have everything setup like I want it:

3) Upgrade the live 3.x site to 4.0

3) Pull the member database and forum posts from my upgraded 3.4.x site to my new 4.x test site

When I'm sure it's all good:

4) Remove all the files from the root of my live site

5) Wipe the database tables from my live site

6) Export the Database tables from my test IPB 4.0 site

7) Import the tables I exported from my test 4.0 test site, to my live 4.0 site

8) Transfer all the files from the root of my test 4.0  site to my new live 4.0 site

9) Make sure the site is functioning correctly, and then open it for new business.

Probably a good idea to close the site between two and three

Is this scenario even possible?

This seems like a lot of work, but could be a way to start clean.

TIA...
