Spell check

Featured Replies

it be nice if IPB had a spell checker atleast in a modual that can be enabled and disable. As for language well maybe have a language file or something member themself can do.

There is no point, as per above all major browsers support it and even Windows and Mac OS X have system wide spellchecks... :)

Ah ok... I've been using Mac for years and it's also had it for years. I assumed it was a normal thing.

Having read this I checked in FF it has spell check but with US dictionary so I downloaded GB dictionary and set to use as default. Now I don't have to put up with my browser telling me I spelt COLOUR wrong. :)

I'm so used to misspelled words being underlined with a red squiggly line that if I'm using something else besides a browser and I mistype something, I get confused for a moment as to why it wasn't pointed out to me. Of course, even with a built-in spell check within the browser, there are some words that I know are spelled correctly (even Google it to make sure) but it marks as being misspelled.

I would imagine that to make a hook or app or even make it built-in to the core product, it could cause more problems than it solves. What if there are words or terminology being used that are custom to the community? Those words would get flagged (as it does now with the browser's built-in checker). If the members know there is a spell checker in place, they might get confused as to why known terminology isn't recognized. What about resource usage? Would need to either have a full dictionary downloaded to each member so it's a client-side process, which in turn could cause some lag on older computers, or have each word checked with the server, which in itself could create another set of issues. The upkeep for just that one feature could be more trouble than it's worth as well.

Since most browsers have it, I don't see any point to it. If there was a way to 'add words' that a browsers dictionary uses, but only for that site, that would be different, because then a dozen or so words/whatever gets added so when the browser highlights words, it's ignoring words that are custom to a specific community. Not sure if that's even possible (something tells me it isn't), but barring that, no benefit what-so-ever.

Now I don't have to put up with my browser telling me I spelt COLOUR wrong. :smile:

Psst, you spelt 'color' wrong. ;)

Some of the comments here seem to assume everyone is as well versed in using the computer as they are. In fact, most of my members purchased a computer and use default settings.
The fact is that I use Internet Explorer--what most of my users use as the default setting--and it does not currently provide or apparently support a spell check.
The version of the IPB I began with a year or so ago had spell check and all was good. The next version was a great improvement and I expect there were tradeoffs, but the net result is it left me scrambling for a solution.
I think the solution would have been to suggest a reasonable workaround. Telling me that all browsers support spell check is not true and not a reasonable answer to come from the vendor.

We have never included a spell check service in any of our versions so I'm not sure what you mean there about upgrade :)

Your users may install the Google toolbar which is coming with spell check.

wasn't there a spell check hook for 3.1 series?

A: Friends don't let friends use IE.

B: And how many resources would you dedicate to this? shall we have a nice huge table/file with every word in the American English and British English language, and every other language, or split them up into different tables/files?

It is relegated to the browser/plugin as the browser does not run on your server, consuming server resources to check the spelling of words is plain wasteful.

That sentence expired.

That sentence expired.

When? IE10 is just as bad... I tried, really, really hard to like using it, it is still the same hog resource-wise, and the dev tools and rendering are still atrocious.

That sentence expires when MS puts out an IE worth snot.

Like.

I still prefer the default IE that comes with Windows 7, because the upgrade from there is, IMO, a downgrade. In their attempt to add new features and make it customizable, they instead dangled a carrot but didn't deliver. Still hard coded crap in it so you can customize it but only by their limiting set of rules.

As soon as they put out a version that is similar to FF/Chrome but more efficient because it knows what resources should be available (it is, after all, a MS product within an MS product), then I'll upgrade willingly. Other than that, I'm holding out as long as I can. Mind you, that's just for the version of IE that I use from time to time for random stuff. I still primarily use FF and Chrome.

I am not sure what the problem is. I left UltraBB so that we could have a smaller database and for the additional features such as the gallery. I got those okay, and initially, I got a spell check but no "Recent" tool. Now I have a "Recent" tool but no spell check.
I have included part of a screen print from UltraBB's compose screen. Note the red arrow pointing to the spell check tool. There was one of those in the version of IPB that I purchased.
The server I am using included unlimited storage and pretty huge bandwidth. My computer is fast enough, as is my DSL connection that most functions such as open file are more or less real time. The storage may as well be limitless. I think most people are in that situation these days. So the conserving resources seems like a pretty lame excuse.
The real issue is that IPB is a first class board that once came with spell check. Fine, but it seems a little silly for me to have to explain away the lack of such a fundamental feature to my members. I still get complaints for changing from UltraBB.

What version of IPB came with a spell check? I'd like to know because I don't recall there ever being one.

ieSpell is a 3rd party addon, it is in no way related to IP.Board: http://www.iespell.com/download.php

It also hasn't been updated since 2010, so I would assume it doesn't even work with IE9/10.

v2.3.6 had support for ieSpell.

/**
	* Check spelling
	*/
	this.spellcheck = function()
	{
		if ( this.is_moz || this.is_opera )
		{
			return false;
		}
		try
		{
			if ( this.rte_mode )
			{
				var tmpis = new ActiveXObject("ieSpell.ieSpellExtension").CheckDocumentNode( this.editor_document );
			}
			else
			{
				var tmpis = new ActiveXObject("ieSpell.ieSpellExtension").CheckAllLinkedDocuments( this.editor_document );
			}
		}
		catch( exception )
		{
			if ( exception.number == -2146827859 )
			{
				if ( confirm( ips_language_array['js_rte_erroriespell'] ? ips_language_array['js_rte_erroriespell'] : "ieSpell not detected. Click Ok to go to download page." ) )
				{
					window.open("http://www.iespell.com/download.php", "DownLoad");
				}
			}
			else
			{
				alert( ips_language_array['js_rte_errorliespell'] ? ips_language_array['js_rte_errorliespell'] : "Error Loading ieSpell: Exception " + exception.number);
			}
		}
	};

There's a difference between 'support for' and 'included'.

I thought the best spell checker was a good education ? Not a piece of software. :P

I thought the best spell checker was a good education ? Not a piece of software. :tongue:

I agree lol which is why I have been so confused by members moaning it's gone! I never even knew it existed but OH says it did as well so we must have had something added on when previous owner had skin made and an upgrade done a few years ago before I took over.

They've all added things through browsers now so the moaning has stopped :)

TCx

I use spell checkers as a guide/tool, rather than a replacement for proper knowledge. Sadly, even with a spell checker, a lot of people STILL can't spell words correctly, or use the wrong spelling of a word that sounds the same. (They're/their/there, your/you're, to/too/two, etc.)

Its very rare I spell properly, or that my members do, I take them all as accents it makes people individuals rather then everyone being perfect.

it makes people individuals

Everyone is unique just like everyone else.

So 2 years later, and there is still no spell-checker enabled on the latest version of Firefox?

I don't care much about Internet Explorer 8 on my XP netbook, don't even think it has a spell-checker, but Firefox 23.0.1 spell-checker works fine on ALL forum software and web forms, except for IP.Board.

Any plan to do something about this, or am I missing something?
