FZ Posted August 15, 2011 Posted August 15, 2011 Today I am having some serious issues with my host (Site5). I am paying for a dedicated server, but I strongly suspect that they have me on a VPS because I don't even see dedi's advertised on their site anymore. Anyway, I would really appreciate some suggestions on providers that I can trust. I am going to need a lot of help migrating the system, which runs on cPanel and has two reseller accounts onboard. All in I think I have about 50 domain names hosted on the box and am using WHMCS to run billing on it. Any suggestions?
Gary. Posted August 15, 2011 Posted August 15, 2011 So your unsre if your are on a vps or dedicated, Even semi dedicated ? Run these commands via SSH and post the output, I will tell you.cat /proc/cpuinfo Also, Run this command:ls -la /boot Do you see any boot selections ? If you see a line with 1 dt at the end, Then another with 2 dots then it's a VPS. Hope the above helps. Thanks. Gary, PS: If you require any help in migrating or such just drop me a PM :) It's what we do.
FZ Posted August 16, 2011 Author Posted August 16, 2011 Thanks. I will check out Singlehop and see if my operation will fit with their offerings. @Gary, thanks for the tip. I will check it out when I get past this current crisis I am having.
EricGagne Posted August 16, 2011 Posted August 16, 2011 SolarVPS has a very good reputation. I've never been unhappy with them. I know their name says VPS but they also do dedicated.
.Peter Posted August 17, 2011 Posted August 17, 2011 I know I'm probably going to get flame for this one... but I have my dedicated server through GoDaddy. I've never had issues and the only downtime I've had is some random cPanel/WHM bug that comes back every 3-4 months and knocks out one of my IP Addresses so not a GoDaddy issue... Also might want to add as a side note if I could afford another $99 more a month I'd totally switch to singlehop... 8GB of RAM for $199 / mo? That's amazing.
Royzee Posted August 17, 2011 Posted August 17, 2011 I would never recommend managed unless your totally in the dark on servers. You pay 2 or 3 times as much for managed as unmanaged, and still end up doing nearly all of the work yourself anyhow. It isn't that big a learning curve because even unmanaged comes with the OS and basics installed. Why pay the host just in case you need them to install an extra, tweak your php.ini, or other setup file. That is really all you get for the much higher price of a managed server. Unmanaged you still have hardware support if your server goes down, or you need help with a restart or something.

For example here is my output: drwxr-xr-x 4 root root 1024 Feb 6 2011 ./ drwxr-xr-x 30 root root 4096 Jul 14 02:15 ../ -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 6144 Feb 6 2011 aquota.user -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 69598 Nov 9 2010 config-2.6.18-194.26.1.el5 -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 64551 Nov 12 2007 config-2.6.18-53.el5 drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 1024 Feb 6 2011 grub/ -rw------- 1 root root 2589071 Feb 6 2011 initrd-2.6.18-194.26.1.el5.img -rw------- 1 root root 2380390 Feb 4 2008 initrd-2.6.18-53.el5.img drwx------ 2 root root 1024 Feb 4 2008 lost+found/ -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 80032 Mar 12 2009 message -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 32 Feb 6 2011 quota.user -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 111264 Nov 9 2010 symvers-2.6.18-194.26.1.el5.gz -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 87586 Nov 12 2007 symvers-2.6.18-53.el5.gz -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 970587 Nov 9 2010 System.map-2.6.18-194.26.1.el5 -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 903969 Nov 12 2007 System.map-2.6.18-53.el5 -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 1876564 Nov 9 2010 vmlinuz-2.6.18-194.26.1.el5 -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 163 Nov 9 2010 .vmlinuz-2.6.18-194.26.1.el5.hmac -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 1791540 Nov 12 2007 vmlinuz-2.6.18-53.el5
AndyF Posted August 17, 2011 Posted August 17, 2011 Polite note: Other hosts come under "competing services" as such. It is best to discuss such things on an independent site. I've refrained from snipping other hosts links out of this topic.
AndyF Posted August 17, 2011 Posted August 17, 2011 But IPS don't have dedicated options AFAIK it can be done on a custom basis for those that need a dedicated server due to community size. See here > http://www.invisionp...ng/advanced.php ' alt='' class='ipsImage' >Advanced packages operate on VPS or dedicated server hardware If you need more than our Advanced packages provide, call us for a custom quote I was merely trying to avoid this topic being cleansed / locked that's all. Volvospeed Posted August 17, 2011 Posted August 17, 2011 But IPS don't have dedicated options One of my dedicated servers is actually through IPS.
GCWX Posted September 8, 2011 Posted September 8, 2011 Has anyone used SiteGround? That's who we have our dedicated server package with.
.Peter Posted September 8, 2011 Posted September 8, 2011 Has anyone used SiteGround? That's who we have our dedicated server package with. Lol just looked at them.. their cheapest dedicated server seems on the pricey side and their most expensive server seems on the cheaper side lol.
Heyhoe Posted September 8, 2011 Posted September 8, 2011 Trying not to hijack, but what's the best UK based dedicated server for a reasonable price? I'm looking at moving from shared to dedicated but I have no experience of running a server. Are there any step by step guides? I'm concerned about keeping it up to date for security reasons more than anything. And if I have a problem do I pretty much need in-depth knowledge to fix issues? To add, it will not be for another year I switch as it's dependant on site growth.
Gary. Posted September 8, 2011 Posted September 8, 2011 You could get managed soloutions but that can be expensive.. On thing I always say is if you are unsure on a dedicated go with cPanel software, Ok it's$34 a month for that but then they will fix any issues you will have, It's like semi managed so if you have an issue they will fix, And show you how they done it.
Matt Campbell Posted September 15, 2011 Posted September 15, 2011 KnownHost is a good one, have been using them for awhile now and their support response times are the quickest I've encountered. I've also have heard good things about WiredTree, and Sync6.
HighlanderICT Posted September 15, 2011 Posted September 15, 2011 We are with www.wiredtree.com we only have VPS but service and response time to any issues is excellent
Royzee Posted September 16, 2011 Posted September 16, 2011 KnownHost is a good one, have been using them for awhile now and their support response times are the quickest I've encountered. I've also have heard good things about WiredTree, and Sync6. Their resourse are a bit short: low end options don't have enough ram for a slow forum, however the highest two package have enough for most fairly busy sites. My middle VPS package has nearly twice the ram and storage of their high end package for less than half the price. I won't mention the host publically because pushes at the IPS rules.

Royzee Posted September 16, 2011 Posted September 16, 2011 What's the host? I asked... Hoah k it is intoVPS, and monthly cost is $40 (I pay $52 w cPanel/WHM) for medium package: 2048ram (4096 burst), 120GBstorage, CPU quad core 2.67GHz. Totally self managed, but support is helpful with configuration. OTOH it is nice to have access to the main php.ini and firewall IP tables to block bad bots.
