Invision Community 4: SEO, prepare for v5 and dormant account notifications By Matt November 11, 2024
Rowen7 Posted November 9, 2010 Posted November 9, 2010 Previously on vBulletin with a third party chat, I noticed several people finding the site because they looked for "[keyword] chat". Could you incorporate a simple SEO option panel into the next release? 1. Title override. 2. mod_rewrite to ../chat 3. Keyword/Description override.
Guest Posted November 9, 2010 Posted November 9, 2010 Unless you have configured chat to allow guests to view it, search engine spiders will receive an error on the IP.Chat page. You'd probably be better off writing a topic about your chat, and keyword optimising that, in which you direct users to your chat. :)
bfarber Posted November 10, 2010 Posted November 10, 2010 Not only are guests blocked (so spiders are blocked too) I can't fathom an instance where you would WANT a spider indexing a chat room. It's not site-relevant content that you should care about seeing show up in search engines. Indeed, for our site here I wouldn't want anything posted in chat showing up in search engines.
Michael Posted November 10, 2010 Posted November 10, 2010 It's true that there's no real SEO advantage to this, but surely the /chat part would be a quick fix and would be nice for those folks who like their pretty URLs, right?
bfarber Posted November 11, 2010 Posted November 11, 2010 /chat is not a problem, no. I was mainly referring to the other points (keyword/description override, title tag override).
Collin S. Posted December 15, 2010 Posted December 15, 2010 You'll be glad to know that this is now a feature of IP.Chat and will be released very soon.
Collin S. Posted December 21, 2010 Posted December 21, 2010 You guys rock. Thank you. Just came out 15 minutes after your thankyou. :)
