Anyone else back to default blue yet?

Hello !

The only thing I really do not like is colors : they do not match, there is too much contrast and no more hues.
The grey color of quote, reply, top and report buttons doesn't match with the rest of the page. The light blue and the dark color in title bars don't match at all.

Just my opinion...

Cool also it drifted into my mind after Matts post, will their be a beta release of Nexus / Dynamic or something? And whats hold this release up? And did anything change in converge, I am looking to do some serious work with that app.

I prefer the 'original' and have never used any other skin but I'm glad that both will be available!

I just hope that the 'original' will always remain (please!!!)- even though it will mean a bit of extra work for IPS whenever a new version is released.

I was going to report that Bug Tracker is broken with the new skin - but I can't get to it.

Parse error: syntax error, unexpected '(', expecting T_VARIABLE or '$' in /home/forumsi/public_html/cache/skin_cache/cacheid_11/skin_bugtracker.php on line 46

To address the issue of it being easier to make changes...

It wasn't meant that it was necessarily easier to make a full complex skin - for that it will be the same amount of work as it always has. The new skin was borne out of a need internally to speed up skin development - we often have clients come to us and say 'we just want the colours changed and our own header put in'. The new skin makes this far easier to accomplish than before: the CSS has a colour scheme file added, so that all key colours are easy to access in one go (and in logical order), all the icons and buttons are neutral so can be left as-is and still work with any scheme, and grey is used throughout the skin for the same reason . I did a test, and managed to create a green skin using the new one as a basis, in just a few minutes.

So it's important to understand the initial point of the new skin - making it easy to quickly develop basic skins for clients who don't need fancy pants pages. That's really what it is for. It's an internal tool that we've made public for those that want it. :) If you don't, that's fine :D

It's unfortunate I can't share some links to skins I've worked on the past few weeks that have used the new skin as a base, to show you it's still versatile. I would estimate it's sped up my development time by a half. You *can* still change the buttons if you want to, but the idea is that now, you don't have to if you don't have the time. They'll work with any colours you choose just fine :)

[edit]Yes, a GDK for Board, Blog and Gallery will be released at the same time as their respective product releases :)

While the skin has less background imagery, there is more css added to it, and (from just looking at the pages) more template editing. :P

Adding new things to learn and change hardly makes it easier for the novice/hobbyist skinner. :)

There's more CSS only because the colours are now separated. I think most people would agree that'll make colour/background changes easier for the important classes (e.g. maintitle), and since that's what you go in the CSS for the majority of the time, it should help. There's lots of classes in the main CSS that you hardly ever need to work with, so now you don't need to see them.

Not much has been added or changed that'll make it any harder for 'novice/hobbyist' skinners. In fact, it'll make it easier. It's basically the same skin with some tidied up bits. Classes have been used more consistently (e.g. formbuttonrow is now always used for buttons at the end of a form, whereas it was a few different classes in the old skin), sections have been simplified (e.g. the post screen is now a simple table, rather than divs in a table in a table in a div), and the graphics can be left as-is if you want, even if you change the colours of the skin.

As I said above, if you're going to create a full-on complete redesign for a skin, your workload won't change and you may prefer to use the old skin as the base. The new skin makes it easier to create the basic skins, which is what people ask us for most of the time.

ok just wondering then... whats the difference between this and the skin making tool on invisionize which is great i have to say, aside from this being officially ips. Wouldn't ips gain more from making something similar to that?

if no0nes seen it before:

Personally I've never been happy with the results that gives, all it does is change the hues of everything in sight. For example, if you change the colour to green, all the 'inverse' colour becomes purple. What if you don't want purple, or what if you want a combination of red and gold, etc.?

I agree its pretty useless, I tried using it once to maybe start off a skin, but I ended up scrapping most of it. I can see how this skin would be easier to make changes too, and looking forward to doing that.

Clever. ^_^

In my case, I just have so many base skins, I can drop in a style sheet from any one of them as a base, then mass find/replace the two or three colors that need to change. B)

I like the flatness, but not the darkness. For instance, the dark color on the title of this Fast Reply box and at the bottom of the page is a bit too dark. I think it would have looked better with a little more blue like the original skin. That's sort of the signature color for IPB (purple for vB). Gotta maintain your branding :)

And yet the beauty of this skin is that it's easier to customize than the old, meaning you can bring back the brighter blue while still maintaining the flatter look.

I honestly never was a fan of the classic blue skin, and I lik the new one much more. It's nice, simple, and clean. :) Great job Rikki.

i am not happy with the new skin, i go back with the ugly blue one.
New skin needs some smooth overwork. Dark colours are toooo dark. It looks like a cave website now.
Very unfriendly, not prof.
Perfekt for modding the skin, also perfect for Undertakers. :)

Thumbs up from me. I really really like the new look, but then I never was a fan of the old blue style.

And if what Rikki says up there is true then it sounds like a win-win situation.

Just a quick suggestion - the upload button on the post reply screen is a fairly out of place green, and looks odd next to the grey of the Browse button next to it. Is this simply an oversight?

Nope and i never will be!

Absolutely love the new skin and can't wait to get this up and running on my board. It is much more professional and as stated easier to alter should you find the need.

Good job! :)
