Reason for minimum height for popular posts

If its a short post thats popular it leaves empty spaces in posts, can't work out the reason for this?

Are you talking about the empty spaces after the text and before the horizontal rule that divides the post area from the post controls area?

It's very odd  - other than the small badge in the upper right of the post indicating it is popular, I see no reason for the min-height...
