How do I check when a plugin needs to be updated?

Will I have to always view the plugin's download page to see if it needs to be updated, or is there a plugin that will tell me when it needs updating?

Two options:

A) It might show in the ACP if the developer uses the API for updates:

B) Subscribe to the file in the Marketplace, so you get a notification when new versions are out.
