Upgrading 4.2

Dear All

I have a standalone licence version of 4.2 which I installed on my server. All working well. I now want to upgrade it to the latest beta. Instructions say I can create a constants.php file with the following therein

define( 'USE_DEVELOPMENT_BUILDS', TRUE );

I've done that, but the site won't load - all I get is a screen of random characters. Deleting the constants file repairs it. But how do I upgrade the beta without wiping the server and starting again?
