Can you use Profile fields for user settings?

I was just brainstorming and im wondering it it is possible to use a variable. Im not sure what it would be set up like but for example. If a user had a profile field setting for hiding profile. Can we use a yes/no option and then if yes/no profile field = yes then display profile page - if no then display something.

I know the logic but im not sure if profile fields can be used this way?

Im thinking this may be a cool way to set up user specific settings that they can toggle on and off

You can do that with the Rules system.
