Commerce - auto renewal subscriptions?

Hi, we're new to Commerce (formerly Nexus) and want to be sure we understand so we don't lose paid members...

What is the correct way (step by step) to make sure a subscription is set to auto-renew via PayPal?

There are a ton of settings but admin panel descriptives, forum discussions and guides are far and few between.
