Apfelstrudel Posted July 31, 2015 Posted July 31, 2015 Hello, how can I disalbe the upload from other websites? I just want to have an local upload.External uploads could be a legal copyright problem.
Ralf Herrmann Posted July 31, 2015 Posted July 31, 2015 Do you mean “upload local attachment” vs. “insert image from URL” and functions like that?Technically, it doesn’t make much sense to prevent embedding, since the user can then just download the external image and upload it—creating the same output. Legally, you are not correct (if I understand your point correctly). Uploading copyrighted is a problem. Embedding is a smaller problem (since the image stays in control of the original site owner) or even fully legal.

Well, embedding can be a program because a lot of sites don't like it when you embed images from them and "steal" their bandwidth. That might be the situation he means.
chilihead Posted July 31, 2015 Posted July 31, 2015 I would also like control over this because in my databases and articles I do not want image embeds. So please add an app setting. Some admins like the displayed images to reside on their own servers, embeds are not good for posterity, they are out of your control. Years (or even days) later a lot are missing, and topics, reviews, databases, and articles deemed useless. And bbcode still parses them as well. There is no more bbcode, but in the back end it works and there is no way to turn it off.I would think a setting could take care of all possibilities. Editor button, bbcode, and html.I would like control over this because I have to tell authors to attach which they don't always do. Thanks

ThanksThat is another point - if you let users add external images, the host can pull the images down and it messes up the posts on your site.Edit: A way I've seen this solved with other scripts is that the admin can enable an option that means when a user inserts an image URL, the image is downloaded and re-uploaded to your own server so it's not being loaded from someone else's server.

Or a photo host site just disappears one day. We need to be able to disallow embeds per app. Especially in databases, I want all content to be on our server. No one wants a site where their main content is controlled by others. You can lock editing and deletion but that has no bearing on anything outside hosted.

I'd like people to put whatever on the forums, but for things like articles, guides or news I'd want a more permanent image solution that keeps everything local so it doesn't get destroyed when some site goes down.Or when we get things like imageshack, where every image turns into an advert for their new services...
chilihead Posted July 31, 2015 Posted July 31, 2015 Exactly, forums are more casual and current, but databases are actual site content, and old records are accessed as much as new, with an alphabetical database for example. Would love to see this added.Edit: A way I've seen this solved with other scripts is that the admin can enable an option that means when a user inserts an image URL, the image is downloaded and re-uploaded to your own server so it's not being loaded from someone else's server. I've never seen that but always looked for something like that. That, or some sort of cache of the image like google search does. And store the cached version forever. Do you know if a mod exists for IPS?
