I don't remember seeing in 4.0.0, now on 4.0.7 we have these three grey balls under the user name.

Can these be turned off, I don't see them on this site.

Yes!

OK, silly question, how do I turn them off?  Should I just say 0 pips, or have other people deleted them?  I wounder why they don't show up here?

Just delete the ranks

Or yes, you can just set as zero.

This site does use the "pips", they use a custom image, the small red square.
