are you able to convert 4.0.1 with non western symbols with success?

not sure if its bug or not which is why im asking users here if your conversions of non western symbols went fine?

my problem i have several japanese posts and i made sure to select utf8 conversion that supports foreign symbols. but once the upgrade has been completed everything messed up. all japanese posts were converted to nonsense symbols
