Saurabh Jain Posted August 25, 2012 Posted August 25, 2012 I found a option - no of of IP addresses 2 or 4 What role they play ( from 2 to 4) ? on what parameters we will needed more ip address's ? Regards Saurabh
Grumpy Posted August 25, 2012 Posted August 25, 2012 I'm assuming this is for your VPS/dedi from reading your other thread. If you wish to manage your own ns servers (most control panels [cpanel, plesk, etc] wants to manage this service), you need at least 2 IPs. That is a rule which states you need at least 2 name servers (ie 2 IPs)... a rule you can somewhat-easily avoid... So, even with that, you technically only need one. This rule exists b/c they want your dns to be hosted in geographically dynamic locations, not 2 IPs belonging to the same server... A good goal, but often not met. Ends up wasting lot of IPs. Something where you NEED more IP is when you have lot of SSL backed domains. So, if you have 3 SSL domains, you need at least 3 IPs. You can use the same IP for everything else web-server related. So, number of IPs is really a non-factor.
Saurabh Jain Posted August 25, 2012 Author Posted August 25, 2012 Thanks Grumpy for useful information Yes I am looking for VPS setup > with two IP's and say 5 domains and I will have cpanel or plesk decision still to be taken.... can i have one domain with http://spicyflavours.net - let others be on normal http:// with two ip address > can this be done?
Grumpy Posted August 27, 2012 Posted August 27, 2012 You can put infinite domains on a single IP address (as long as no httpS is required). Thus, you can naturally put it on 2 as well. In fact, they actually make no difference unless you tell your server to only accept incoming via certain address. Because IP address really is just a point towards a physical machine. As long as they came, you can serve anything you like in any way you like.
