Invision Community 4: SEO, prepare for v5 and dormant account notifications By Matt November 11, 2024
TCWT Posted May 4, 2007 Posted May 4, 2007 I don't like the fact that the new PM counter resets to 0 even when there are unread messages after going to the Inbox and then another page on the board. It's one of the most illogical and STUPID things about IPB, why make it work this way? Not everyone reads all their PMs after visiting their Inbox. Why do IPB have to the ONLY one that works this way? Many members have missed PMs cause of this, myself included. <_<
Luke Posted May 4, 2007 Posted May 4, 2007 I'm inclined to agree, but the logic is there."# New Messages" means that you received new messages. When you look at them in your message list, they are no longer new whether you've read them or not. So that is logical..If you had "# Unread Messages" it would work like you proposed. You would have to read the all the messages for it to return to zero. Personally I think "unread" makes more sense... That's how email programs do it.
TCWT Posted May 4, 2007 Posted May 4, 2007 Ok fine but why don't IPB make it work like 99.99% of other email and board software? I'm betting most users would rather have unread than the # of new messages shown. With unread messages, at least you'll remember to read them since if there are any new messages, it will be a number greater than 0.
Michael Posted May 4, 2007 Posted May 4, 2007 FYI, it's not anything 'new' that is does this, it has always reset to 0 after visiting your Inbox.
Keith J. Kacin Posted May 4, 2007 Posted May 4, 2007 It is basically New PMs since your last visit (to the messenger). Similiar to New Posts since your last visit. I suspect if it were to do as you mentioned, we would rename the link to "X Unread Messages"
Luke Posted May 4, 2007 Posted May 4, 2007 Would be nice to have an option to have either, but have it be an AdminCP option. Personally I don't see why it cant be "# Unread Messages". If you get a new PM you get My Assistant anyway... Knowing how many you haven't read makes sense to me.
