If we added a way for users to select which forums show up in the view new posts feed, would that be a sufficient solution? That's something that I think a lot more users would find useful, but should also address your primary concern?
I would love you forever if you did this. I have one particular forum on my board that 90% of my users have no interest in, so I've excluded it from New Content, but typically the 10% are up in arms. -
I know there's an ACP setting to exclude particular forums from View New Content search results, but how about an option for end users to choose for themselves which forums they would like to see results from?
I have one forum on my board that is very "marmite". Some people love it, some hate it. If I exclude it via the ACP setting, the ones who love it will hate me. -
My Control Panel says: Displays the last 10 status updates from members
But my forum is showing around 30 different status updates for members. I'd like to reduce this back down to 10 as advertised.
There's reference to this in the bug tracker

Charles, when you're logged into the client area, the "Get in contact with us" at the bottom right of the page links to https://www.invisionpower.com/company/contact.php which gives the File not found error. It should be http://www.invisionpower.com/company/contact.php
Not sure if this is already reported via the tracker, but it seemed pertinent to the problems gmn has faced, so thought I'd mention here.
