problems debugging forums software?

Hello, I am running invision community v4.3.6 and I have been tasked with re-incorporating some of my company's custom code back into the software after it was upgraded from v4.1.19.4.   

I'm getting frustrated because when I try to debug the software, or even if I am running the software and have an IDE open viewing the code, then the software will freeze up until I close the IDE.

I have the software running in xampp using php 5.6.32.   I installed xdebug & am attempting to debug the software with either visual studio code or eclipse.   Both IDEs give me the same problems.   Anyone ever run into this or do you have any suggestions?

In case anyone runs into this, it now works.   We upgraded PHP to 7.2 & used the corresponding xdebug.
