how to change title color when unread

is it possible to make the subcategories' (or categories in general) color change to a different color when there's an unread thread in it?

i had an older theme that did it, but because i had to change the layout, the newer one doesn't do it. the theme also did it with the icons but i've been told its harder to do that counting its svg icons.

if not, is it possible to make the thread title itself a different color to show "unread" as i'm not a huge fan of the unread dots?
