Good search is important to my users; I'd love nothing more than to switch to ES if it didn't break vital things every time I've tried...

They fixed the elasticsearch issue for me back in October by removing the view count updates. They manually modified my files on 4.3.6, perhaps you should reach out to them and see if they can provide you with the fix? Ticket #1020755 in case they need to reference it.
