How do *you* do IPS dev work while your live site is up?

I'm wondering if anyone could share their process is for duplicating your site for dev, testing a feature, app or plugin without disturbing the community or site files, and then implementing the change?

Install a local or live version (live must be offline for visitors and protected with .htaccess).

You can put your live license key there, but put: -TESTINSTALL on the end.
