Cut user Avatar if nothing is set

Hello.

If a user doesn't have any avatar ... in the standard setting it shows the default picture.

I can upload a 1x1 pixel image to the ressource of the default picture. But this doesn't resolve the space problem, that the dimensions of 100x100 are still holded back.
So how can I trim the space for example in the topic view?

Has anyone an idea how to do this?
