[security feature] Display Name

Hello,

Since the 1.4.x the display names have been removed. However my community need this feature and we can't move forward with 1.4.x without it. Having the login name private unique and different from the public name (display name) is a security feature. Also, since email can be modified, the only way to identify a member is the login name. We really need this to be up again, we still run with the 1.3.9 version because of it.

I hope we aren't the only one in a dead end.

Same problem. We have members that, for one reason or another, prefer to have seperate log-in and display names. Forcing members to give this up seems a little overboard and I, personally, do not see the benefit. The argument that Facebook and other social media makes it acceptable is pretty weak. We should be able to decide how our site is run and whether we want to keep an option that has been a part of IPS until now or if we want to jump on the Facebook/Microsoft, please force us to conform, bandwagon.

Sorry, but this is frustrating to have to deal with.

If you want to keep display name and login separate, you can set it to email login only.

Not sure where that bandwagon argument comes from. Who has defended it like that?

It was in another thread that said that social media, like Facebook, made using real names the norm. As for setting to email, one reason we need to have the original option is we have members that have devices set up so they can log-in to different sites with the same log-in name and still have a variety of display names. It's a convienence for people who may require or prefer doing it this way. Before you ask why anyone would require this, I, personally don't, but I do have diminished manual dexterity from Muscular Dystrophy and can see how it would make a difference.
