Wildcard searches not working in 4.1.6

Recently upgraded to 4.1.6 and wildcard searches stopped working. So you can search for a word like "whirlpool" and it will find exact matches on the word "whirlpool". But search "whirl*" and you get 0 search results. 

Also, advanced search hangs when doing any search with the "match any word" option selected. 

Both of these functions were working fine in 3.x and 4.1.5.2. Got borked in 4.1.6.

Anyone seeing this? Any fixes? 

Already put a ticket in with tech support on this yesterday morning but got crickets.
