Templates - access to Members email

On the settings overview page I see that it's possible to output the users email using:

{member="email"}

 

However is there any way that I could assign the users email to a variable?  It seems like it should be easy to do but I can't seem to find any documentation on it..

Something like this:  

{{$uid = \IPS\Member::loggedIn()->name;}}

EDIT: not sure if this was technical support due to the nature of the question or templates because it's in a template, sorry if I got that wrong
