Michealfan Posted September 12, 2009 Posted September 12, 2009 Hello Can someone please help me with the SSH. I shall be greatful if someone can take this up from the very first step , i.e How to check if whether one has SSH enabled or not and if yes how to start from there and if not then is there any option to enable it in CPanel or not?
comranking Posted September 13, 2009 Posted September 13, 2009 What do yo mean? If you have ssh access you can use putty for it.
Michealfan Posted September 14, 2009 Author Posted September 14, 2009 This is what I want to know- how to verify whether I have SSH access or not? I hardly knows anything regarding that.
Mark H. Posted September 14, 2009 Posted September 14, 2009 If you're on Shared or Reseller Hosting, you would need to ask your Host whether or not you have SSH access. If you don't, many hosts will enable it if you ask their Support to do so. (One of mine does, and did for me).
Michealfan Posted September 15, 2009 Author Posted September 15, 2009 Well here are some screenshots from CPanel , if they helps in anyway in finding the answer to my query...
Ryan H. Posted September 15, 2009 Posted September 15, 2009 You can probably connect with your FTP credentials, but would you really know what you're doing in the shell?
Michealfan Posted September 15, 2009 Author Posted September 15, 2009 Thats the point and this is the reason I wish to know how to start with the SSH .
Mark H. Posted September 15, 2009 Posted September 15, 2009 OK, now I understand what you're asking about. That section is for the creation of an Authentication Key, which is used INSTEAD of a manually entered password in an SSH client. On my server, I have Password Authentication turned off, and use Auth Keys exclusively. For that, you can generate an Auth Key inside cPanel, or with Pageant (which is included with the Putty SSH Client package). If you want to connect using Password Authentication (and *most* Hosts use this method) instead of an Auth Key, you don't need to worry about it. Just get an SSH program and enter the host/user/password details. I recommend Putty ( http://putty.org, which leads you to http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/putty/download.html ). It's free and works perfectly. Get the correct release version package for your Operating System. If you're using Windows, here's the direct link: http://the.earth.li/~sgtatham/putty/latest/x86/putty-0.60-installer.exe That should get you started.
Michealfan Posted September 16, 2009 Author Posted September 16, 2009 Thanks a ton mate. That should be of some great help. Now atleast I know where and how to get started with it. I shall soon revert after I am done with what all have been explained by you above. :)
