Affects privacy setting: 'Allow users to browse the Active Users list?'

Hello,

I observed some strangeness with this setting.

Set to 'yes', everybody can browse the online list.
Set to 'no', nobody can browse the online list.

I found that a bit too general / absolute. Well, I expected administrators and global moderators are 'protected' from this, but admins and global mods are also forbidden to view it.

Having a global option or at least a per group setting to allow / disallow it for them would be nice. This was possible in IPB 1.x days and I found it very useful to have.

I personally do not want guests (and spiders) to be able to access the online list.

And I want a per group setting to allow or disallow a certain group to access the online list. Something similar was possible with IPB 1.x. But that seems not possible with IPB 3.x now.

Do I overlook something?

I have actually just uploaded a application/hook of which will allow you to select which member groups can access the active user listing page and even deciding which groups can also see the IP.

This is just a basic application and hook, so all you would have to do is to upload the files to the correct directory and install it through the admin cp. And edit 2 templates to make it work.

At the moment, it is currently waiting for approval here.

There wasn't a per-group setting for this in the 1.x series, it required a mod then too. I know, because I wrote the mod. ;)

Well, I had not any (3rd-party) mods installed, but it worked the way I described it. It was clearly possible to set something like that. I denied it for guests, validating, inactive / 0 post members and banned. I allowed it for admins, mods and active members. So it was like a per group option.

And regardless of what the general setting for 'Browse the Active User list' was set to, admins were always allowed to view the online list by default, even if set to 'no'. That were independent from the different group settings.

I am using IPB since 1.0 and were always satisfied and pleased. Today, I do not know the exact 1.x version anymore (could be 1.2 or 1.3). Too many years are gone. As said above, I never installed any (3rd-party) mods. I did several modifications myself, but I actually can not remember me to have changed anything in group permissions area. So I think it was in some way already there by default or the modifications were so very minor I do not remember me. ;)

Nevertheless, it would be really nice if we were able to differentiate a bit more between guests and members and have admins and global mods to be protected (if wanted) from the general setting like it is possible in several other areas in IPB 3. Or even better have a simple per group setting.

That is my wish for a future version of IPB. :)

I do not need a (3rd-party) mod for it. I can easily modify it myself and tune it to my own special needs. But I think something like this should really be a IPB default option. That is why I posted it here ...

I'm looking at the code for 1.3 right now, it has no per-group settings for the Active Users list, nor does it check to see if the active user is an Admin. Maybe it was like what you're describing in 1.2 or older, but I'm doubting it.

Regardless, it is a good suggestion for being a built-in feature. :)
