Viperjts10 Posted October 9, 2007 Posted October 9, 2007 Is this at all possible to do? It would be a huge improvement if something like this could be used. You Tube has the customizable user profiles where you can put the background colors however you want, or put an image as your background, or change the text style etc... well, why not make the IPB profiles in a similar format. Allow the users to be in complete control of their profile so that it expresses them. Does anyone know if this is possbile or if there's a mod out there for this then, maybe? If so, let me know please. I really think that this should be in the IPB though.
atomicknight Posted October 9, 2007 Posted October 9, 2007 Eh, from a developer's point of view, allowing that much customization is actually a bad thing. Most users aren't quite attuned to proper web design, and so they choose some horrendous concoction of colors and fonts and end up with a huge mess (for an example, just look at MySpace).Writing a mod for it would be quite simple though.

Would you happen to know if someone made a mod yet that would work this into my board? Sorry if I shouldn't be asking this here, but it's still a suggestion left open for discussion.
CynicalFrost Posted October 9, 2007 Posted October 9, 2007 Matt and Rikki stated before that the profile was never intended to be a MySpace clone. As such, they also stated that letting users add HTML code to their profile was a bad idea due to the possible malicious intentions. So, I'm not really fired up about the idea of letting user's choose their own colors. Plus, it may actually detract from performance.

I'm not talking about a myspace type of profile where EVERYTHING is customizable, but more of a Youtube customization. Just the basics such as background color and text style, and allowing boxes to be placed where they want. There's no html on Youtube, isn't that right? All they have the ability to do is add Hex Color Codes, and that's it really. If admins didn't want to allow their members to have their profiles very customizable then of course, they could disallow this option, but I think it would be a cool feature, if not a cool mod for an add on for me or other people to install on their forums.
Rοb Posted October 9, 2007 Posted October 9, 2007 I wrote a modification to allow my VIP members to insert their own css into their profile and it has proved a great success. Some are ugly as sin (in my opinion of course), but whether we like it or not, people like choice and that is a massive reason why sites such as MySpace, Bebo, Facebook etc are so popular. Also, by adding this feature it has not only encouraged them to learn some web basics, it has dragged out some previously unseen design skills and creative flair that i never knew existed for some members!Site owners want beautifully written, xhtml valid, smart looking profiles. Members want vivid ugly profiles that resemble a paintbox throwing up. It's just the way it is :)
Alex Posted October 9, 2007 Posted October 9, 2007 We have been developing something similar over the past few months, ands its nearly ready for release. But just let me start off, HTML is NOT allowed due to huge security risks. But other parts are more customisable. And like Rob said, members can't completly customise their profiles in sense of their own skins, but they can choose what skins members have to use to view it.[AH23] Socialiser - http://forums.invisionize.com/index.php?showtopic=129651

That is very awseome though and I'm actually glad anyways that html is not allowed because there are way too many people who think it's funny to mess sites up with their html tricks and bad hacks. Do you happen to have a topic or some subscription place that I can subscribe to so that I know when this mod is officially finished?
Alex Posted October 9, 2007 Posted October 9, 2007 Subscribe to this forum: http://forums.ahmodding.co.uk/index.php?showforum=2We are just updating the look of the installer, its looks more like the IP.Board Pro skin now, but with the look and feel of our site. We will be sending it to our testing team tomorrow, so I guess a month or two before a beta is released.

Hence its cleaner look overall.

Giving people the ability to customize their profile like that gives them a reason to come back often, etc., etc., helps promote usage.
