Plugin 'Hooks'

I found an old topic about this, but I think it's a point worth raising again.
I've worked with both Wordpress and MediaWiki recently, and I noticed that their plugin systems are very very user-friendly to install and maintain... why? Because they offer a 'hooks' system for plugins.
I personally think that IPB should offer a more widespread option to include this, as the components system and backend API, whilst helpful, do not offer the same flexibility that many modders currently find by making direct edits to a file.
Obviously there's potentially a very high number of places within the code where hooks could be placed, and I'm not asking for you to cover every one of these possiblities, just cover more than you do now.
