Defining a "Hot Topic"

I find that a simple number trigger to define a "hot topic" is a little misleading. For example, if your trigger is 20 replies and you get your 20th post 45 days after the thread is created, then that SLOW topic suddenly becomes hot.

A more accurate way to identify hot topics would include admin-defined posts per recent-time-period parameters.

For example, an admin might say that a hot topic has >=10 replies during the past 24 hours.

This way, the hot topic indicator would alternate from hot to cold depending on a defined level of recent activity, instead of forever staying hot once the number of replies reaches a set number.

This would only bloat the system in my opinion and there really is no need for this.

I'm not sure where "bloat" even comes into the picture.

The issue is what does "hot" mean?

As currently implemented, it means nothing more than having a set number of replies over ANY time period.

That's a pretty nice idea; one I never even though of. Good job.

I think having hot topics in the first place is bloat. You can easily read the number of replies. I, personally, am more interested in the topic title/description.
