the forum search the way it currently is is a big mistake IMO. It is far more practical to have the search at the top of the forum, rather than at the bottom.

I think this needs to be rectified asap. Other bulletin boards have this feature and it is really very handy. It should be a separate drop-down option at the top

if that is VB then so be it... :D I can vouch that it works very well. Sure, your implementation could somehow try and improve on that... perhaps, the search field could just be there at the top, so you don't have to click the drop-down to see it..
