4.0 - AdminCP Reordering

Different staff members typically have different roles within a community - especially larger communities, where you may have staff responsible for the theme, others handling tickets and different staff maintaining the system. In 3.x, we had a 'Bookmarks' system in the AdminCP that allowed you to create a menu of frequently-used sections in an effort to make them easier to get to, rather than navigating the main menus.

As with every feature in IPS4, we took some time to think about what this Bookmark feature aimed to achieve, and whether it was the best way to achieve it (seriously - we have considered everything you'll see in IPS4 very carefully; nothing gets a free pass).

We determined through speaking to administrators that the primary use of this feature was actually to get to one place quickly - whatever place that might be. It appeared to be rarely used as an actual bookmarks menu, and besides, duplicating browser functionality should always send up a red flag. We decided to rethink the idea.

What we decided to do instead is allow AdminCP menus, both primary and secondary, to be reordered on a per-admin basis. This means each admin can set the AdminCP menu up however works best for themselves. If you use the theme system a lot, you can make that your first menu item. Or, if you use the ticket system in Nexus, you can put that first.

Here's how it works:

Love this idea.  My question becomes this though, can a default order be made so that new admins will get a specific order (that they can change obviously)?  Perhaps a global default, then a per-group default (a group assigned to handle support requests would have Nexus as the first element)?  Can the feature be disabled per group as well, in case you don't want to allow customizing?  Just little curiosities, if it's not in there, no matter, the overall idea is still wonderful and I love it.

The praising aside...  I don't believe that the 3.x version of bookmarking could be fairly considered a duplication of a browsers bookmarking, because the adsess can't be carried over or dynamically updated in the browser.  Not only that but if someone uses different browsers depending on the circumstances (from work, different computer, etc), then they might not have the same bookmarks available.  That aside, my only real 'issue' with the 3.x bookmarking is that it only saved time if there was something more than just navigating to a particular function, because otherwise you are still bringing down a drop-down menu then finding which one you want to go to.

I don't suppose a bookmarks feature could still be retained, but in this modified way.  Across the top (to the left of the search box), have three bookmark spots, so that no matter where you are, you can click on one of them to either save (if it's not already set) or go directly to it.  No need for a drop-down or navigating through menus.  When hovering over the saved bookmark, have a little spot on it turn to a red 'X' so it can be cleared.  Using this idea, someone can just click on something at the top to navigate to something a little more specific that the normal menus might take an extra moment to get to.

For example, in IP.Content, for editing different pages within a desired category structure, you have to get to Content/Pages (let's assume one click), then navigate to the nested folder you want to work within.  That could take at least a couple of more clicks.  If someone is doing stuff that frequently sends them back to the top level of the Pages section, that's constant navigation back to where they want/need to be.  But having a customized quick-link at the top, they can click that anytime and be there.

By the way, the idea of allowing only three is on purpose.  Anything more than that and it could get sloppy/cluttered.

In the video, I see that the area being viewed is for ban filters.  I hope that the long labels of "Non-registrable" will be changed so that it just says "email addresses" and "names."  Otherwise, that's a lot of real estate in the left column that could be used in the second and third columns.  Just wanted to toss that in there before I forget.

Question, what's with the '5' next to the magnifying glass (next to the 'Ban settings' title)?

The bubble is a development tool to add search terms to the page. It only shows to us.

The menu is simple - it has a default order we define, then individual admins can customize it. There's no per-group orders and so on.

Looks nice, but when can we expect the release? Even an approximate time frame would be appreciated.

I'm guessing sometime between now and December 31st, 2014.

So will that tool be removed before release, or only available when IN_DEV is set?

Something I recommend is the ability to disable the feature.  Either per group or system wide.  As you can imagine, there may be those who are given ACP access but might mess up the ordering, so when someone else is trying to guide them, confusion sets in.  Or better yet, a way to 'revert to default'.

I don't like this change, in 3.x like Wolfie said we could bookmark specific pages (like a member profile or a specific folder in IP.Content, and even setup them as homepage). With this kind of re-order feature you can't specify a default home page either, I assume it will probably load the first like you have in your custom order but it's still less flexible since you can only re-order the apps and modules but not the modules sections. Or at least the video doesn't show this option.

Perhaps using the idea of three bookmarks across the header, allow any one of them to be toggled as the default homepage when initially signing in?  I'll be fully honest, the bookmarks system available now, I've only got like four in there and those save me from doing three or four clicks to get to where I end up going often.

It will be great if you add an ACP login alert

When admin login to ACP to get email alert to root email:)

You should post that in the feedback forum since it qualifies as a feature suggestion.

Can you move back and forth between the 2 hierarchy levels or between different menu items? E.g. System > Settings gets moved to just Settings or System > Settings gets moved to Support > Settings (for whatever reason)

No, it's only reordering - you can't make modules a tab, and you can't move modules between tabs.

Nice idea, personalization is always good to have!

Will there be an option to hide certain categories/blocks, which usually are not used by a person at all?

Will there be a possibility to create own tabs?

THIS would be great for the sidebar!

Admin could define "must have sidebar blocks" and everything else, the user can arange everything else (just like the good old google starting page, anybody remembers the good old times?:D )

still no developement for Messenger - thing which is very usefull on bigger boards.

You don't know that. They space out the blog entries of what they have more or less finished while working on other stuff. They might have done work on the messenger but not shown us a blog entry for it yet.

If you have any requests or concerns, you should make them in the feedback forum. Doing so here is unlikely to get the attention it deserves.
