Is there a built in welcome message feature in the native version of Invision? I thought that one was introduced but can't seem to find it.

I wish to send an automatic message to members when the register for an account, to give them useful and helpful information.

I’m not aware of anything like that build in. 
Sending welcome messages you may achieve by using app named „Auto Welcome” by devfuse. 

There is a short registration confirmation email. You can just change the language string “email_reg_complete” in the translation settings and turn it into a welcome message. That’s what I do.
