Block display of adsense to secondary groups

What is the best method to use to achieve what I want to do?

I want to display to members the adsense, unless they are a member of a secondary group.

I've been testing this and the "shows to" doesnt work exactly how you would expect it to

Ironically the way it works helps me, but I don't think its intentional.

If the user is in the primary group members and I select shows to "members", this works
If the user is in the primary group members and a subgroup, and I select shows to "members", this does not work as the subgroup not having permission to see the advert overrides the show to.

So if a user is in a primary group and a sub group then you need to "show to", to both of those groups for it to be visible.
