Using PHP to count characters in a post

Ok so... A few things to consider when reading this request for help or further info.

• I'm PHP illiterate ...  I need to fix this but for now I call upon you handy folks  

 

I'm using ADVANCED RULES and POINTS ECONOMY.  What I'm looking for is a rule that goes beyond just checking for a post - It checks for a character count as well.  I know this can be done using PHP but the HOW is WELL beyond me.  RULES in both conditions and actions does have a spot for manual PHP entry so I'm wondering if that can be used to my advantage.

This just stems from not wanting to award points for every little tiny, possible spam post but rather look for a character count.  I know it's not the best way to gauge quality BUT it's a method none-the-less.  

Any help on this would be great!
