Chinese search in MySQL 5.7.6 - ngram fulltext parser

We have quite a lot of Chinese content, and for searching this we tend to rely on Google. It's not ideal - some parts of our site are private, indexing might be slow. 

I was reading yesterday about this - looks like MySQL 5.7.6 onwards can do a fulltext Chinese index for x-character ngrams 

Is anyone doing this? Does it work? How feasible is it to set it up?
