Confirmation for "mark X as read"

My users are reporting that they are accidentally marking individual forums (via the speech bubble icons or the "Mark Forum as Read" link at the top of a forum index) as read. I once did this myself, and it doesn't necessarily need a laggy device to happen. In my case, my phone triggered a screen rotation and in trying to correct it I accidentally tapped the mark as read button.

Is there a simple way to code a confirmation window or modal? Ideally, I'd then like to apply this to any instance of "mark as..." in my themes.
