Notifcations on members you don't approve at registration

Am I correct that if you disapprove a member or "Ban" a new registration they receive an e-mail notifying them ? Is there an option somewhere to turn that off ? Often I will see past banned users attempt to get in but I don't want them to receive the notification when I don't approve their new account.
